It could have been 152 or 154, but it was 153. God is a God of details so that number of fish means something. It jumped off the page like a burning desire, Holy Spirit was prompting me to know why that many fish. Fisherman of course have to count or weigh their fish when they go to market, but that number represents so much more because it is a specific number that God put in the bible. So I just Googled it… Mathematician I am not so the mathematical properties of this number are mind blowing to me and I began to feel like the disciples who had been out fishing all night but didn’t catch anything… frustrated because I couldn’t grasp the whole understanding of a triangular number. So I let my heart lead me back to the scripture ~ John 21

10Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.

11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153 of them; and [though] there were so many of them, the net was not torn.

It was an abundant catch, a miraculous haul, an overflowing blessing. Ever pray for God to bring about something in your life and nothing happens. I can hear my own voice through the disciples, there’s nothing there. The disciples had gone back to Pre-Jesus employment ~ fishing (i.e. living).  They were trying to hold onto their familiar old ways, even though they had been in the presence of the resurrected Jesus. But then they followed His instructions and they were immensely blessed not with just a few fish for breakfast but large fish. Of great note as well, the net was not torn. He holds it altogether for us!

Even though at the end of John’s gospel which he states “25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written”; there are exactly 153 documented healings by Jesus in the four gospels.

I grew up in South Florida, I love fishing. During the summers I spent many a day on the Indian River with my Godparents; my Godfather was a commercial hook and line fisherman. We would wake up at 5am, grab some grapefruit off the tree on our way to the boat. Those went into the ice chest for a cold treat late in the hot afternoon and I curled up on the warm engine cover for another hour of sleep while Uncle Johnny steered us out into the Atlantic Ocean. That was adventurous fishing all day on the open waters. Of course the day before we had been wading into shallow water casting a net to catch bait or mullet to smoke for dinner. Then there is the quiet sitting on the dock with a single pole dropped into the water, waiting for the red snapper to pull on your line. There are many ways to catch fish and ways to live your life. I choose to live mine with Jesus, as my Lord.

To me 153 reveals the abundant blessings of God’s love. I want to be praying specifically for God’s will to manifest in my life, to be fishing (i.e. living) every day to know God more intimately & enjoying His abundant love. I desire to know God’s heart and I want to be sharing the revelations of the Holy Spirit into the character of my King Jesus.

Come fishing with me; drop a line, cast a net, or steer into the open waters; God has a bounty of blessings for us.

12 Jesus said to them, Come [and] have breakfast.

Let’s feast… shall we?
